Description
Baking bread over a campfire is easier than you think. Follow this step-by-step guide to make delicious bread on your next camping trip.
Ingredients
- 3 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 packet of active dry yeast (or 2 ¼ teaspoons)
- 1 ½ cups of warm water
- 1 tablespoon of sugar or honey (optional, for a touch of sweetness)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough: Mix flour, salt, yeast, and warm water in a bowl. Knead for 5-10 minutes until smooth. Let it rise for 1-2 hours.
2. Set Up the Campfire: Build a fire and let it burn down to hot coals. Spread coals evenly for consistent heat.
3. Preheat the Dutch Oven: Place the Dutch oven near the fire to preheat. Lightly grease the inside.
4. Bake the Bread: Place the dough in the Dutch oven. Cover with the lid and arrange coals on top. Bake for 30-40 minutes, rotating occasionally.
5. Check Doneness: Tap the bread—it should sound hollow. Internal temperature should be 190°F (88°C).
6. Cool and Serve: Remove the bread, let it cool for 5 minutes, then slice and enjoy.
Notes
Always monitor the heat of your campfire coals closely to avoid burning the bread. Rotate the Dutch oven occasionally for even baking, and use heat-resistant gloves or tongs to handle hot equipment safely.
